Paper machines by Walter Ruffler

Walter Ruffler, one of Europe's most accomplished automata designers, makes humorous and sophisticated mechanical paper kits. These paper "machines" use cranks, levers, wood sticks, and thread to simulate amazingly lifelike movement. This paper machine kit contains what you need to make a working paper automaton: four construction sheets printed with the model parts, kebab and cocktail sticks, and fully illustrated step by step instructions. The model requires scoring, cutting, folding and gluing. You'll need some items for this; namely, a pair of scissors, a craft knife, glue (white school glue), a push pin, a needle, and a piece of string. Recommended for ages 12 and older.

Fire Dragon by Walter Ruffler
Fire Dragon by Walter Ruffler
Our Price: $9.95

Normally a gentle beast, when provoked this dragon breathes fire snapping his mighty jaw, rearing up on his hind legs and fluttering his beautiful wings. A gentle dragon indeed! In “Fire Dragon” the handle moves a crank slider that makes the dragon rear up. His jaw, forelegs and wings are all operated by strings, which tighten when the dragon rears, causing coordinated life-like movement.
Red Knight by Walter Ruffler
Red Knight by Walter Ruffler

The Red Knight and his noble horse stand guard. Threatened, he springs to attention rearing his horse, raising his sword, ready to defend his honour. In “Red Knight”, the rotation of the handle is converted by a crank slider into the movement of horse and knight. The horse rears, the knight straightens up in his saddle and raises his sword. The left foreleg of the horse and the knight’s arm are operated by strings, and move in unison when the crank is turned.

A skipper rides out stormy seas in his dinghy. Tossed to and fro by the waves, he is nearly pitched overboard, but manages to right himself and his craft. In “Stormy Seas”, the handle moves a crank slider. The free end of the lever is fixed to the skipper and carries out an elliptic movement: the skipper rises up and sits down again (perhaps only because his feet are glued to the bottom of the boat!) as the boat glides back and forth on the crest of the wave.

Good Fishing by Walter Ruffler
Good Fishing by Walter Ruffler
Our Price: $9.95

A fisherman has hooked a big one, but will he land it or will it land him? In “Good Fishing”, a lever turns the rotation of a crank into the movement of a fisherman landing a fish. He rises up, pulling up the fish – surprisingly a shark! Further crank movement makes him sit, the shark disappears in the waves and the whole cycle man versus shark begins again.
