Stormy Seas by Walter Ruffler
Paper Animation by Walter Ruffler
A skipper rides out stormy seas in his dinghy. Tossed to and fro by the waves, he is nearly pitched overboard, but manages to right himself and his craft. In “Stormy Seas”, the handle moves a crank slider. The free end of the lever is fixed to the skipper and carries out an elliptic movement: the skipper rises up and sits down again (perhaps only because his feet are glued to the bottom of the boat!) as the boat glides back and forth on the crest of the wave.
Walter Ruffler, one of Europe's most accomplished automata designers, makes humorous and sophisticated mechanical paper kits. These paper "machines" use cranks, levers, wood sticks, and thread to simulate amazingly lifelike movement. |
