Egyptian Shaduf by Walter Ruffler
Paper Animation by Walter Ruffler
An Egyptian peasant lifts the water from the Nile to his high-lying field, while the crocodile lurks near waiting at a chance is snap. In Pharaoh´s times, the shaduf used a counter weight of Nile mud to help lift the bucket of water from the river. In the model the rotation of the crank is converted into the oscillating motion of the shaduf lever, the jaw of the crocodile will be opened by a bell crank lever. A wall painting of this shaduf can be visited in the tomb of the noble Ipui in Theben West, 1240 B.C. Nowadays they mostly use motor pumps!
Walter Ruffler, one of Europe's most accomplished automata designers, makes humorous and sophisticated mechanical paper kits. These paper "machines" use cranks, levers, wood sticks, and thread to simulate amazingly lifelike movement. |
